What's the role or importance of nursing as a profession?

In the healthcare sectors, the professionals have to deal with various situation in different environment. Nurses are the one who are the most trusted professionals in such adverse situations. The role of nurses have evolved with time. The tasks of nurses in healthcare institutions are that of experience, training and trust. The patients get the touch of the nurses more than the doctor. In past years the role of nurses were defined in sponge baths and bedpans. In present they are performing a number of medical duties as well. This change in their job profiles have made the task more complicated and critical.


There is no doubt that doctors are the most important part of the healthcare structure, but as of the patient care unit, the role of the nurses are even more crucial than doctors. They are the one who stays with the patients in their journey from illness to cure. The patients sometimes trust the nurses more than doctors. They provide the mental support to the patient and their family as well. The level of dedication that is required to become a nurse in daily basis could only be understand if one visits the hospital and see their work process for a full day.

Other than the care and support giving, the nurses do have duties like collecting blood sample, providing medicines on time and answering questions. They take care of the people staying in the hospital day and night. The evaluate the treatment of the patients with time, keep track of the health changes and supervise the patient health over time in the hospital. The different courses that are offered for nursing assignment also have some medical treatment procedures. These courses helps nurses to understand if there is any red flag in patient situation. They communicate with the family of the patient and the doctors as well. As they have the responsibility to stay with the patient most of the time, they could report the changes of the patient health.

Nurses have to go through strenuous physical pressure in their jobs. They provide services for more than even 12 hour shifts. They are emotional support givers of the patients’ family. They have knowledge of the illness and the skill of people management. These skills make them counsel the family of the patient. But as the job requires them to over-shift duties, they also have to manage their mental and physical stress regularly. This is a job of sacrifices and patience for the patient care and welfare. Therefore, the role and importance of the nurses in the healthcare structure is indispensable.
